What:

The Happy Movie is a 90-minute documentary that sets out to answer what makes us happy. Academy Award-nominated director Roko Belic takes viewers to the bayous of Louisiana to the deserts of Namibia to explore the secrets behind our most valued emotion. These stories and more will lead viewers to a deeper understanding of how to live a more fulfilling, healthy, happy life.

Following the film, a panel of NWU professors who have expertise in the area of happiness and positive psychology, will share their thoughts and offer insight.

Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 7pm - The documentary Happy - www.TheHappyMovie.com - will play at Nebraska Wesleyan University on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 7pm in Olin B Lecture Hall, which is located in the Olin Hall of Science, one block east of 50th and St. Paul Ave. This free and open to the public. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with three NWU faculty around positive psychology - the study of happiness and human flourishing.

This presentation will serve as an introduction to the following months meetings on Housing Development and Economic Development.

Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 10am - Stronger Together: Envisioning a Northeast Lincoln Partnership. The Northeast Lincoln Partnership unites Bethany, East Campus, Havelock, Kahoa, Meadowlane, Riley, and University Place. Milan Wall, Executive Director of the Heartland Center for Leadership Development - the organization that brought you Great Neighborhoods! - guided us on a journey that helped us form a vision for a Northeast Lincoln Partnership by beginning with economic development.

December 2011 - Positive Health - Dawes Middle School - Dr Bob Rauner - Health as a function of medical care, community, and education. Correlations between socioeconomic status, obesity, fitness, and academic achievement.

November 2011 - Community Learning - Dawes Middle School - Angie Zabawa on Community Schools - relentless engagement in providing reciprocal opportunities for relationships and experiences between the school and the community. Doug Emery on the Northeast Citizen's Meeting, ongoing since the City of Lincoln went from a at large city council to a districted system. Robin Mahoney with the United Way - Readers, Tutors, and Mentors - raising 3,200 readers, tutors and mentor. We need more than dollars, we need people to make a lasting impact on childrens success

Summer Saturdays In Havelock, Nebraska:

The four of us would pile into the car,
with kicks and shoves to get a window seat.
(No Joyo Theater and Hershey bar
if we continued with the hands and feet.)
Mom, pulling money from her purse would say,
"For haircuts. Buy yourselves a soda pop,
then get back over to the IGA."
We barreled into Smitty's Barbershop
and in succession occupied the chair,
while old men gummed cigars and chewed the fat.
Though we were apt to squirm we didn't dare
for fear the hand that clipped would stop, and that
a voice behind would hiss "Now listen here,
you move like that again I'll have your ear."
